September 2000 Fuel Crisis

Fuel Crisis Questionnaire and Response Datasets

The files below are the result of two related projects funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council in the UK. The first project involved conducting an 'emergency' survey of car users immediately following the September 2000 fuel crisis. The second project involved the data entry, data cleaning and checking, data processing and analysis of the responses from the survey. Both a mailback and web survey were conducted using the same questionnaire. Results from an analysis of the mailback questionnaire are published in the book Transport Lessons from the Fuel Tax Protests of 2000.

It is hoped that other researchers may benefit from access to the questionnaire and resulting data sets. The files are freely available to download and use. The data sets are Microsoft Access files. No analysis information is provided but the data sets contain not only the raw response data but a number of additional fields created based on the raw data for use in quantitative analysis. The Access files contain separate databases for each of the eight sections of the questionnaire survey and an additional file summarising changes made to car use by each respondent and their household. An accompanying notes file provides a guide to the data sets.

All files are provided on an 'as-is' basis. Whilst every effort has been made to check the data sets for removal of errors and inconsistencies, the Transportation Research Group accepts no responsibility for the accuracy or otherwise of the information provided. Enquiries concerning the datasets should be directed to Dr Kiron Chatterjee (K.Chatterjee@soton.ac.uk).
