Research Opportunities

MSc Course in Transportation Planning and Engineering

This Programme is supported by EPSRC within the Universities Transport Partnership (UTP), a consortium of 7 leading UK Universities providing postgraduate programmes in Transport (see www.utp.org.uk). This provides for 5-10 studentships each year and a range of exciting programme developments.

Introduction

The planning and engineering of effective transportation systems continues to present exciting challenges, both in developed and developing countries. Issues include:

  1. The widespread use of private cars
  2. The effects of transport on all aspects of the environment
  3. Congestion on roads
  4. New towns and industrial estates: Old towns and urban renewal
  5. The economics of transport
  6. The movement of freight
  7. The difficulties of public transport
  8. The potential of new systems and operations on transport
  9. National and international interaction

These issues have led to an increasing demand for transportation professionals across the world. This MSc programme, which has been running since 1969, is designed to help meet this demand. Students gain a sound knowledge of the theory and concepts involved in transportation planning and engineering, benefiting from the expertise available within our 25-strong Transportation Research Group, as well as from some 20 Transportation professionals from external organisations who contribute to the programme.

The programme offers excellent career prospects, particularly in transport consultancies, public authorities and a range of other transport organisations.

EngD Transport Knowledge and Systems Engineering

Introduction

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree, established by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), is a four-year doctoral programme involving a significant taught component. It provides ambitious and able research engineers with the technical, business and personal development competencies needed to become the senior research managers of the future.

Students on the programme are termed Research Engineers (REs). They are sponsored by a UK company, or a company with a research and development base in the UK. The research undertaken is more applied than in a typical PhD, of the same intellectual challenge, and is carried out in an industrial context.

During the first two years REs undertake advanced courses in technical and management subjects, whilst carrying out research based at the University and sponsoring company.

The taught elements of the EngD include MSc courses from the Schools of Engineering and MBA courses from the School of Management, tailored to meet the needs of each individual RE.

A key element of the programme is the close involvement of the sponsoring company. REs spend at least half of the four years engaged in research at their company.

The final thesis should reflect a state-of-the-art understanding of industrial and management processes as well as of the field of engineering relevant to the work. It is of a standard comparable to that required for a PhD although the scope will generally be broader.

Postgraduate Research in Transportation

In addition to our MSc and EngD programmes, opportunities are also available for research studies in any aspect of transportation, leading to the award of MPhil or PhD. These awards require a minimum of 1 year and 2 years of full-time research respectively, although part-time study is possible over longer periods. Research into any aspect of transportation planning, transportation/traffic engineering and highway engineering will be considered, and students will be supervised by one or more of the Department's permanent staff.

Research students benefit considerably from interaction with our MSc course through attendance at selected lectures. Students also benefit from integration with research staff of the Transportation Research Group (TRG) which has some 15 research staff with a wide range of expertise available to support postgraduate work.
