SITE DESCRIPTION

The research site retained for the PRIME project is an integral part of the new ring motorway network, providing a quick access to the new Athens airport at Spata.

This is a major new ring road for the Athens area, consisting of two sections,
the 52 km Elefsina-Stavros-Spata Airport Motorway and
the 13 km Imittos Western Peripheral (ESS-IWP) Motorway.

The motorway will incorporate 31 interchanges connecting the system with the existing road network. It represents one of the largest infrastructure development projects in Greece and is part of the Trans European Networks (TEN) Program of the European Union. Upon its final completion, scheduled for mid 2001, the new Motorway is expected to have 170,000 users per day or 65 million per year.

The site covers a 5 km central portion of the first motorway section, between the junctions of Attiki Odos at Metamorfosi and Kifisias. Traffic management will be performed by a Temporary Traffic Management System (TTMS) which will provide computer aided monitoring to the operators of the PRIME site. Several functions will be performed in this center, e.g. permanent display of static and dynamic information of traffic conditions, Automatic Incident Detection (AIDS), monitoring of equipment, and motorist information system by means of Variable Message Signs. This Traffic Management System constitutes the test bed and pilot study of all new technologies that are planned to equip the Central Traffic Management System of Attiki Odos.
