The selected site is equipped with 12 CCTV cameras used for traffic monitoring purposes, 18 Local Controllers, 12 Detection Stations, 10 Variable Message Panels, and 13 Variable Speed Signals. A fibre optics ring provides the support for the exchange of information between the system components and the Traffic Management and Information Centre located in the Nus de Collcerola, almost in the middle of the site. The diagram below details the Ronda de Dalt in the section around the Round About of the Karl Marx Square, showing the detection stations, highlighted in green, and in red the Variable Message Panels located in this section.

Layout of Test Site

The detection stations provide measures of flow, occupancy, speed and traffic composition per lane every minute. Traffic data are stored at the Traffic Management and Information Centre in a Historical Database with a level of aggregation of 5 minutes. The 10 Variable Message Panels have each 3 lines totalling 120 alphanumeric characters that can display messages and pictograms from a library of 12 predefined messages and 60 pictograms. Messages are classified in three categories:

  • Compulsory (i.e. maximum speed);
  • Informative (i.e. incidents, accidents, congestion, blocked lanes, etc.);
  • Recommendations (i.e. alternative routes).

There are 13 additional Variable Speed Messages whose function is to recommend speeds to implement speed control on the sections

12 CCTV cameras, for traffic monitoring and surveillance, cover almost the entire length of the site bringing to the Traffic Control and Information Centre a direct view of the actual traffic conditions on the surveyed stretches. Images of some of these cameras can also be accessed through Internet as part of the real time traffic information system. A snapshot of the corresponding screen of this traffic information system displays the location of the CCTV cameras accessible to citizens (on the left) and the image of the CCTV camera inside the highlighted red square (on the right).
