INTEGRATED INCIDENT MANAGEMENT

Urban / Motorway IIMS in Munich

Background

The objectives of the IIMS tests in Munich were to develop and evaluate routing strategies in order to react to severe traffic situations on the motorway and on the ramps, taking into account the motorway and the urban road network of the fair ground Munich Riem and to apply the AIMSUN II model for traffic simulation in order to assess the effectiveness of the routing strategies for different incident situations, following the PRIME validation plan.

The aim of the testing was the development of integrated incident management strategies for a network combined of motorway and urban roads with a very high traffic load.

For the off-line simulation of integrated incident management strategies only incidents detected by U06 and verified by time-speed-diagram as severe traffic situations were used.

Component Operation

The AIMSUN II simulation model was used. The Munich site specific data format was transformed into the AIMSUN II format and different management strategies were created to influence the traffic in the test site on the motorway and in the urban road network. The different strategies were simulated and evaluated with the help of AIMSUN II.

However, the use of on-line management strategies was not possible. Since the operators already use proven tools to control the traffic in an established manner, no interaction with these strategies was allowed. Additionally, during large fairs (e.g. BAUMA) there is an on-the-spot police presence intervening in severe traffic situations.
