All control centres (VBA, VnetS, PVLS) are working with traffic data from inductive loops. For traffic surveillance and verification, CCTV systems are available at certain traffic spots.

One system is responsible for the highway traffic conditions on the A94 and uses inductive loops and 5 CCTV cameras. The traffic is controlled using overhead variable message signs, by processing traffic volume, speed, occupancy and weather data. To keep the traffic running on the highway in peak time a ramp metering system is operating on 3 highway intersections.

A second system is a route guidance system for visitors of the exhibition area. Via text messages on the highway and the urban roads, it provides directions to the available parking areas and back to the highway entrances. The system processes traffic data from the highways and parking areas within Neu Riem. After processing all the traffic data a specific scenario is chosen and sent to the message signs of the system. For special controlling of intersections 5 CCTV cameras were located in the urban network.

The third system is responsible for the traffic flow on the roads around the exhibition area. The system controls the traffic lights (about 30) and gives an optimum traffic flow for different traffic situations. To select the optimum traffic light program, an incident detection system is implemented which detects the traffic situations (level of service) in the area sections (60 loop detectors are installed).

In future a common control system which controls all affected control systems for traffic management is necessary. This is especially so for incident management and will be part of the PRIME project. Specific incident strategies will be developed in PRIME project which will be integrated in the traffic management system. With this set of strategies, incidents should be handled in a better way and/or predicted incident situations will be avoided. This will be tested mainly offline, by using saved traffic data from the field. The aim is to harmonise the daily traffic and traffic jams caused by the exhibition area. This new traffic management system represents a state of the art in the transport sector of Germany and is illustrated below.
