Please note: the best practice guide has now been published. Entitled, 'Public Transport Information Web Sites: How To Get It Right: A Best Practice Guide', it is available to download at http://www.trg.soton.ac.uk/bpg. It is also available to purchase in hardcopy or CD ROM (click here to download Word97 order form). These pages are historic, produced during the project and remain for information only. They will not be updated again.

The Development of Best Practice Guidelines for the Provision of Public Transport Information on the Internet

The Good, the Bad and the Unusable - Have Your Say!

Towards the end of 2000, the (then) Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR), in association with the Institute of Logistics and Transport (ILT) provided funding to the Transportation Research Group (TRG) at the University of Southampton, in partnership with Austin Analytics, to develop a best practice guide for public transport information (PTI) on the Internet. The research analysed the content and presentation of PTI on existing web sites, to highlight good and not so good practice, enhancing the usability of traveller information on the web.

The first draft of the guidelines has now been completed. Thank you to all who completed our feedback form, and to members of the public transport industry who gave their time to talk to us. The feedback form has now been removed, but you can still email us at s.kenyon@soton.ac.uk if you have any further queries or comments.

On this site you can also find links to information about the existing accreditation process for PTI web sites, the project objectives, project philosophy and timescales. There is also a list of usability heuristics, a preliminary list of guidelines against which existing PTI sites will be assessed and which are detailed within the project philosophy.

The final draft of the report will be launched in May. A report summary is available. Please contact Susan Kenyon for a copy.
