(Information provided by Hartmut Keller)

a) Germany

There are at present no specific curricula on transport telematics in Germany, with the exception of some courses on Transportation, Traffic Engineering and Traffic Control which contain aspects regarding Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The latter are mainly an outcome of European RTD projects carried out at the respective universities which have had an impact on the contents of theses classes. This is true, for example, for the following universities:

  • TU Munich, Prof. Keller (keller@fgv.tum.de)
  • Uni Stuttgart, Prof. Kuehne, (reinhart.kuehne@dlr.de)
  • Uni Duisburg, Prof. Schreckenberg
  • TU Dresden, Prof. Strobel
  • Uni Hanover, Prof. Friedrich, (friedrich@ivh.uni-hannover.de).

New chairs are being set up at the universities in Munich, Berlin and Stuttgart for 'Traffic Engineering and Telematics', indicating that the subject is gaining acceptance.

New research institutions with a focus on transport telematics have recently been set up:

  • Institut für Verkehrstechnik (Traffic Engineering) of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Dresden, Prof. Schuette
  • Institut für Verkehrsforschung (Traffic Research) of the Deutsche Luft und Raumfahrt, Prof. Kuehne (reinhart.kuehne@dlr.de)

b) Switzerland

In Switzerland there are several developments moving in the direction of transport telematics within the curricula of the following two universities:

  • EPL Lausanne, Prof. Dumond: Verkehrstelematik (Transport telematics) (andre-gilles.dumont@epfl.ch)
  • ETH Zürich, Dr. Spacek: Verkehrsbeeinflussungssysteme (Traffic Control Systems) (spacek@ivt.baug.ethz.ch) Profs Axhausen / Lindenmann: Netzmodelle und Simulation (Network Models, Simulation); Prof. Nagel: Verkehrssimulation (Traffic Simulation).

Major impacts are expected from the restructuring of the curricula in Switzerland into the Bachelor and Master system.

c) Austria

In Austria courses on transport telematics are contained within the classical curricula in civil engineering. A new course is starting at:

  • Donau-Universitaet in Krems, Sektion TIM (Telekommunikation, Information and Medien), Verkehrstelematik-Management (Traffic Telematics - Management) offering a Master of Advanced Studies (ibauer@donau-uni.at).

A new course specifically on ITS is under development at the Fachhochschule / Technikum (School of Applied Science) in Vienna for Intelligente Transportsysteme (ITS).
